3 Things to Try When You Are Experiencing Slow WiFi Speeds

Dec 23, 2019

Is there anything more annoying than slow WiFi? Maybe, but you might struggle to think of something else right away. If your WiFi speeds are super slow or your connection is seemingly nonexistent, there are a few things that could be happening.

  1. Your router could be blocked with obstacles.
  2. Your WiFi signal strength is weak.
  3. Your internet service provider (ISP) isn’t providing the exact speeds you are paying for.

Each of these hinderances can be pretty simple to fix, you just have to know what to do. Here are somethings that you can try:

Remove any obstacles

If your router is far away from your devices or blocked by thick cement walls, your WiFi speed and connection is going to suffer. Try moving your router to a more central location in your space to fix the issue. Sometimes, it is as simple as that.

Boost your WiFi signal strength

If your WiFi is suddenly crawling, you should check your WiFi signal strength. Your WiFi signal strength determines whether or not you will have a reliable internet connection.  WiFi signals and WiFi speeds rely on one another, so when one suffers, they both suffer. Make sure that your signal is strong so that you don’t have to deal with slow WiFi or a lost connection.

Run a WiFi speed test

If the WiFi speed in your home is noticeably slow, then you already know there is a problem. But if you notice a slight dip in speed, you might want to check you WiFi speed to see if you have a problem truly worth worrying about. You can do this by running a speed test. We wrote a whole article about how to check your WiFi speeds with a WiFi speed test for you to check out.

It is important to try to know your true WiFi speeds. Not only will knowing your true speeds give you a benchmark for the future, but it will help you determine if your ISP is untrustworthy, or if there are interferences that you can help control or get rid of.
